Common Concerns & Solutions

TooLuxeHair Hair Issues & Solutions Guide

TooLuxeHair extensions are made from 100% human hair. Because this is real human hair, it requires proper maintenance just like the hair growing from your scalp.

Our virgin hair undergoes processing to achieve its texture and consistency. Additional chemical processing performed after purchase—including bleaching, coloring, and exposure to chemicals such as chlorine—can alter the condition, texture, moisture level, and overall behavior of the hair.

Hair extensions do not receive natural oils from the scalp, so moisture, proper products, gentle handling, and a consistent maintenance routine are essential.

Below are some of the most common concerns you may experience, why they happen, and how to correct or prevent them.

1. Tangling & Matting

What's happening?

All human hair can tangle. Extensions are especially prone to tangling when they become dry, experience excessive friction, accumulate product buildup, or have undergone chemical processing.

Tangling does not automatically mean that the hair is defective.

Common Causes

  • Lack of moisture
  • Product buildup
  • Sleeping without protecting the hair
  • Going extended periods without detangling
  • Using products that dry out the hair
  • Excessive heat
  • Bleaching or coloring
  • Chlorine or saltwater exposure
  • Friction from clothing
  • Improper washing or detangling

Solution

Begin by gently detangling the hair in sections, starting from the ends and working your way upward.

Wash the hair with a moisturizing shampoo and follow with a moisturizing or deep conditioner. Allow the conditioner to sit before gently detangling again and rinsing thoroughly.

Avoid aggressively pulling through knots, as this can cause breakage and shedding.

Luxe Tip 🤎

Dry hair tangles much easier than moisturized hair. Keeping your extensions properly moisturized is one of the most important steps in preventing tangling.

2. Shedding

What's happening?

Some shedding is normal with human hair extensions. Individual strands can become loose from the weft during brushing, washing, styling, and normal wear.

A few strands are considered normal. Significant or sudden shedding may indicate that the wefts have been compromised or that the hair is experiencing excessive tension or breakage.

Common Causes

  • Cutting the wefts during installation
  • Piercing directly through the weft
  • Aggressive brushing
  • Detangling from the roots downward
  • Excessive pulling or tension
  • Chemical processing
  • Excessive heat
  • Dryness and breakage
  • Improper washing

Solution

Detangle gently from the ends upward while supporting the hair.

When possible, avoid cutting the wefts during installation. If your stylist must cut them, we recommend sealing the cut areas to help prevent unraveling.

Always handle wet hair carefully because excessive pulling can contribute to breakage.

Luxe Tip 🤎

For maximum longevity, communicate with your stylist before installation about preserving the integrity of your wefts.

3. My Curly Hair Feels Dry

What's happening?

Curly textures require more moisture and maintenance than straight textures.

Because extensions aren't attached to the scalp, they don't receive the natural oils that your own hair receives. Curly textures can therefore become dry, frizzy, tangled, or difficult to manage without a consistent moisture routine.

Common Causes

  • Using water without moisturizing products
  • Not conditioning regularly
  • Using drying shampoos
  • Excessive heat
  • Product buildup
  • Sleeping without protecting the curls
  • Allowing the hair to remain tangled

Solution

Fully saturate the hair and apply a moisturizing conditioner.

Section the hair and detangle each section using a detangling brush, beginning at the ends and working upward.

After detangling, use a defining brush to redefine the curl pattern.

Allow the hair to air dry or diffuse on a low setting.

Luxe Tip 🤎

Water alone is not a moisturizer. Constantly spraying curly extensions with only water can leave them feeling dry once the water evaporates. Pair water with moisturizing hair products.

4. My Curly Hair Is Tangling

What's happening?

Curly strands naturally wrap around one another, making curly textures more prone to tangling than straight hair.

This means curly extensions require consistent detangling and moisture.

Solution

Divide the hair into sections.

Apply water and conditioner or your preferred moisturizing product before detangling. Never aggressively brush through extremely dry, tangled curls.

Detangle from the ends upward until the brush moves smoothly through the entire section.

Once completely detangled, use a defining brush to clump and redefine the curls.

Nighttime Care

Before sleeping:

  • Completely detangle the hair.
  • Place it into loose braids, twists, or another protective style.
  • Cover the hair with a satin or silk bonnet.

Never go to sleep with wet extensions.

Luxe Tip 🤎

Curly hair isn't a "wet it and go" texture. Detangling is part of maintaining curly extensions.

5. My Hair Changed After Bleaching or Coloring

What's happening?

Bleaching is a chemical process that alters the hair.

TooLuxeHair virgin hair has already undergone processing to achieve its texture and consistency. When bleach, permanent color, relaxers, or other chemical treatments are added, the hair undergoes additional chemical processing.

This can change the hair's:

  • Texture
  • Curl or wave pattern
  • Moisture retention
  • Softness
  • Elasticity
  • Strength
  • Manageability

Why does this matter?

The lighter you attempt to lift the hair, the more intensive the chemical process becomes.

Hair that performed one way before bleaching may behave differently afterward.

Overprocessed hair may become dry, brittle, tangled, shed excessively, or matte.

Solution

We strongly recommend having all chemical services performed by a licensed professional experienced with extensions.

After chemical processing, moisture must be restored with conditioning and deep-conditioning treatments.

Avoid repeatedly bleaching hair that has already been significantly lightened.

Luxe Tip 🤎

Bleaching changes the hair. Once extensions have been chemically altered, their original condition cannot always be restored.

6. Swimming With Your Extensions

Chlorine + Hair Extensions

Swimming pools contain chlorine, which can be extremely drying to human hair.

Chlorine exposure is especially important to consider when the extensions have already been chemically altered through bleaching or coloring.

For example:

Virgin Hair → Bleach/Color → Chlorine Exposure

Each additional chemical exposure can affect the condition of the hair.

This can result in:

  • Severe dryness
  • Tangling
  • Matting
  • Rough texture
  • Discoloration
  • Breakage
  • Changes to the curl or wave pattern

Before Swimming

Avoid swimming with your extensions whenever possible.

If you choose to swim, thoroughly wet the hair with clean water beforehand and apply a protective conditioning product. Secure the hair to minimize tangling.

A swim cap provides additional protection.

After Swimming

Do not allow chlorine or salt water to remain in your extensions.

Immediately rinse the hair thoroughly with clean water and follow with an appropriate cleansing and deep-conditioning routine.

Luxe Tip 🤎

Hair that has been bleached or heavily colored requires even more caution around chlorine.

7. My Curly Hair Looks Different After Washing

What's happening?

Curly hair must be properly detangled and defined after washing.

Immediately after washing, curls may look frizzy, separated, stretched, or less defined. This doesn't necessarily mean the curl pattern has disappeared.

Solution

While the hair is wet:

  1. Divide the hair into sections.
  2. Apply conditioner or a moisturizing curl product.
  3. Detangle each section completely with a detangling brush.
  4. Follow with a defining brush to clump and define the curls.
  5. Scrunch the hair.
  6. Allow it to air dry or diffuse on low.

Avoid repeatedly touching the curls while they dry.

Luxe Tip 🤎

Your styling technique affects your final curl pattern.

8. Nape Tangling

What's happening?

The hair at the back of your neck experiences more friction than almost any other part of your install.

It constantly rubs against:

  • Clothing
  • Jackets
  • Scarves
  • Bedding
  • Your neck and shoulders

Sweat and body heat can also contribute to dryness and tangling.

Solution

Pay special attention to the nape when detangling and moisturizing your extensions.

Don't allow small tangles at the nape to accumulate into larger knots.

At night, detangle the nape completely before placing your hair into its protective style.

Luxe Tip 🤎

If the rest of your extensions are manageable but you're experiencing tangling primarily at the nape, friction is often a major contributing factor.

Protect Your Luxe 🤎

Your TooLuxeHair extensions are an investment, and their longevity depends heavily on how they're installed, maintained, styled, and chemically treated.

For the best experience:

  • Keep your extensions moisturized.
  • Detangle regularly from ends to roots.
  • Protect your hair while sleeping.
  • Never sleep with wet extensions.
  • Limit excessive heat.
  • Use heat protectant.
  • Be cautious when bleaching or coloring.
  • Avoid unnecessary chemical exposure.
  • Properly cleanse product buildup.
  • Give curly textures the additional maintenance they require.

Remember:

Human hair requires human-hair care.

Tangling, shedding, dryness, frizz, or a change in texture does not automatically indicate defective hair. Understanding what caused the change is the first step toward finding the right solution.

When properly cared for, your TooLuxeHair extensions can remain soft, beautiful, and manageable throughout multiple wears.

The Luxe Experience starts with proper care. 🤎
